Director of The Speaking Studio

Dr. Adam Sharples Brooks is a nationally renowned public speaker with a Ph.D in Communication and Information Sciences, an M.A. in Communication Studies, and a background in Public Relations. His research focuses on rhetoric in the areas of diversity, identity, and cultural studies. As the current Assistant Director of the Public Speaking Program at The University of Alabama, Adam oversees The Speaking Studio with a mission to help clients clarify and craft effective messages, cultivate dynamic delivery, and calm public speaking anxiety. Over the course of his career Adam has coached numerous public speakers to national acclaim and is an expert in the areas of diversity and communication, public speaking delivery, popular culture, and mass communication.

Dr. Alexa Chilcutt

Dr. Alexa Chilcutt

Director of Public Speaking

Alexa Chilcutt is an expert in the areas of public speaking, professionalism and impression management as well as leadership and team dynamics. She is the director of the public speaking program at UA and provides staff development programs for UA’s College of Continuing Studies and seminars for individuals and managerial groups in the private sector. Chilcutt has a doctorate in mass communication and a M.A. in public relations and advertising.

Aajene Robinson

Aajene Robinson is passionate about being able to communicate about, and to report on, what the world views as significant in people, films, or events through Broadcasting Journalism. She is a double major in News Media and Communication Studies. She is currently working at WVUA23 News as a reporter which has allowed her to enhance her broadcasting skills and become more confident on-air. In addition to that, she works as an Ambassador for C&IS, giving tours to prospective students and their families of Reese Phifer and the Digital Media Center. She also competed in the 2019 Speak Off Competition and placed first, which is how she got involved with The Speaking Studio. Through those experiences, she has learned how to take initiative of her future and cannot wait to meet and interact with you in the Speaking Studio!

Maleah Watt

Maleah Watt is a Communication Studies major dedicated to helping others improve there speaking and writing skills. She is from Prattville, Alabama—a very small town outside of
Montgomery. She grew up in a military family and knows the struggles and benefits of moving to a new place. She has writing experience with Alice Magazine and the Crimson White as well as a poetry manuscript titled “Roses are Red”. Her passion for public speaking and writing have opened up opportunities at the university and in the career field. Because of this, she is devoted to helping others find this same passion. Her favorite part about working in the public speaking studio is watching the growth of individuals as they go from shy of public speaking to confident of what they have to say to the world. She is a firm believer that if you truly believe in something, you should deliver it to the world to the best of your abilities. The public speaking studio helps individuals accomplish that.

Carsyn Long

Carsyn is from Gering, Nebraska and is pursuing a degree in Communication Studies. She has been involved with public speaking since she was 15 and has maintained a passion for performance and communicating effectively. This love for speaking has landed her a spot as a former team member on the Alabama Forensic Council, a finalist in the 2019 Speak Off, and now as a consultant in The Speaking Studio. This involvement has affirmed the belief that public speaking is an essential skill set to grow in. Carsyn hopes to encourage and instill confidence within the speakers she has the privilege of encountering!

Kade Foster

Kade is from Nashville, Tennessee studying Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Communication Studies and in Spanish. He is currently involved in the Mentor UPP engineering mentor program and the Bama Year One initiative, as well as being a member of the ASME and AIAA engineering associations. His passion for public speaking took off in high school when he participated in many Model United Nations and Tennessee Youth in Government conferences where he received praise and awards for excellence in debate and public speaking. He first became involved with the Speaking Studio as a client when practicing for the 2018 UA Speak Off competition where he placed as a finalist, to which he fully credits the time he spent practicing in the Speaking Studio. Kade hopes to use his experience in public speaking to aid his clients in furthering their skills necessary for success in public speaking and for their professional lives.

Malcolm Lowe

Malcolm Lowe is a junior from Warrenton, Virginia pursuing a major in Communication Studies and a minor in Sport Sociology and Law. With career aspirations in the law field, Malcolm understands the importance of public speaking across all industries and avenues of life. Malcolm has always been gregarious, and is known to be the first one to break an awkward silence or talk to a stranger. In addition to working with The Speaking Studio for three semesters, Malcolm also serves as the Student Executive Council (SEC) Communication Studies Delegate. Miranda Rouse

Miranda has an extensive background in public speaking with an M.A. in Communication Studies and as a current student in the Communication & Information Sciences doctoral program here at UA. She began practicing public speaking at the age of 14 and was inspired to help others with their oral competency skills from then on. Miranda comes from another center where she worked for three years as the Graduate Consultant Supervisor and as an Associate. She loves to study Public Speaking Anxiety and share the tips and tricks that she has learned throughout her many years of practice. Miranda has had the opportunity to help students for class projects, pageants, speech competitions, commencement, job interviews dissertations, and so much more.

Senna House is from Birmingham, Alabama pursuing a double major in News Media and Communications. She hopes to one day work as a sports broadcaster. Senna has always had a passion for public speaking and recently won the 2019 Holle Public Speaking Competition. She also has been involved with UA’s First Year Council and Freshman Forum. She believes being an effective communicator is one of the most important skills a person can have and is passionate about helping others grow as confident speakers. Taylor is from Boulder City, NV studying News Media with a minor in Communicative Disorders. Her passion in public speaking began at a young age and has continued during her time at the Capstone. A finalist in the 2018 Speak-Off competition, Taylor is a well-practiced speaker and has since realized the value in helping others reach the same threshold. An involved member of the campus community, Taylor understands how beneficial these skills are in making a lasting impression. She believes everybody has the ability to speak comfortably and passionately about their message in an effective way. As your consultant, she believes it is her responsibility to help you get there.

Wilson is planning to major in Secondary Education and minor in Communication Studies. He is from Tuscaloosa, AL, but has loved getting to explore the new world of the University. After graduation, he hopes to explore his passion for education by becoming a Social Sciences teacher in the public school system. To build towards that goal, he is thrilled to be part of the Speaking Studio team and get to come alongside his peers by learning about their passions and empowering them to share boldly with the world.

Izzy is from Franklin, Tennessee majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Public Relations. After college she hopes to pursue a career in brand content management. She is currently serving on PRSSA’s Social Media Committee and was previously involved with Freshman Forum. Her passion for oratory grew after taking two public speaking courses her freshman year. She fully credits the Speaking Studio for her success in both classes. As a peer consultant, Izzy is excited for the opportunity to work alongside students and help them to grow personally and professionally through their communication skills.
